Sonia Montez Basic Tracking at Quad Lakeside

Sonia Montez was recently in the studio cutting basic tracks for her first full length album. Through a long process of pre-production, arrangement and rehearsals, the recording is at last underway and sounds amazing.

Working with the Henry Street Players, Radian Records producer-engineer Andrew Felluss, and Kiernan McMullan of American Cadence Records, the team got busy at Quad Studios Lakeside

The Henry Street Players configuration for the sessions was:

  • Sean Dixon, Drums (putting the “fast” in fastidious)
  • Adam Minkoff, Bass and Guitar (rocking the Phoenix Pro algorithm)
  • Nick Oddy, Guitars (defending the Republic at all costs)
  • Scott Chasolen, Piano, Wurlitzer, Organs (the Analyst)

Sonia played guitar as well and sang some amazing scratch vocals which you will probably never hear!

This was our first session at Quad Lakeside, and strongly recommend the facility to any of our colleagues who are looking for a tranquil and accessible place to record. There is a cozy control room where recordists do their thing, and where Sonia could sing guide vocals.

The main live room is quite spacious allowing us decent separation between drums and piano. Then there are two isolation booths at the opposite end from the control room, where we recorded acoustic and electric guitars during the live take. The studio also has a great Wurlitzer and Hammond C3 with a customized Leslie and some other rareties. Sonic Scoop also ran a piece on the spot. A million thanks to Lou, Matt and Susan for the amazing studio and hospitality.

Stay tuned, we might well post some media from the session here..

Montez shines, Ayer bores in Coffeehouse

By Kate Bennert ‘12, Arts & Entertainment Contributor

December 8, 2011

Last week’s coffeehouse lured a sizeable crowd out of pre-finals week hibernation for what promised to be a warm and vibrant night of acoustic music.

The show opened up with the lovely Sonia Montez, whose Latin influence and quirky personality proved to be a refreshing change of pace for Hamilton’s Acoustic Coffeehouse series this year. A native of Brooklyn, Montez’s debut record Of Tears and Honey is somber and sweet (as the title suggests) and altogether a profound work of art. [read more…]
